Dubois de Jancigny was the son of Jean-Baptiste Dubois de Jancigny, an agronomist and then prefect of Napoleon. In 1840, the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs chose him to lead a political and commercial expedition to the Far East. In March 1842, he went to Canton where he came into contact with the Chinese authorities. (truncated)
