Early binding in half maroon calf, green pebbled cloth boards, raised bands, blind-rules, gilt-stamped title, by J.W. Lambert, Bookbinder, &c., Settle [Yorkshire, UK]; both joints starting, cords holding. Ownership inscription of George Wilson, who relates a poem to threaten those who do not return books loaned: "If thou art borrowed by a friend / right welcome shall he be / to read to study not to lend / but to return to me / Now that imported knowledge doth (truncated) / diminish learnings store / but books I find if often lent return to me no more." A pencil note suggests that plate XX ("Borodino", facing p. 336) is included here (often missing). Good. "British scholar journeys from St. Petersburg through Moscow to Smolensk, shortly after Napoleon passed there, June-October 1814. Friendly to Russia, he laments the destruction of Moscow." The maps are the northwest part of Russia and the northwest part of Europe (including Baltic). The attractive colored plates are mostly either landscape views or people. The views include scenes of Copenhagen (frontispiece), Monastery of Oliva, Frauensberg, Hamburg, Stralsund, Tilsit, Hermitage, Moscow, Kremlin, Borodino, Smolensko, Memel, Lithuanian Jewesses, Cronstadt Boatmen, St. Petersburg, a Mammoth skeleton (p. 125), village scene, etc. REFERENCES: Tooley 286; Martin Hardie 141; Abbey, Travel, 15; Cat.
