Bookplate of Sir Hew Dalrymple Hamilton, North Berwick & Bargany; title with ownership a different signature [Henry Collins?], 1817. Very good copy. First issued in 1808. A book full of anecdotes – lots of them, clearly historical (17th century tales are easily found in the mix). He also issued a 3-volume work with a similar title, the content being a different period: Anecdotes of the manners (truncated) and customs of London During the Eighteenth Century, (1810) in 2 vols. The author-compiler, was elected a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries. PROVENANCE: Seems likely: Sir Hew Dalrymple-Hamilton, 4th Baronet (1774 23 February 1834) was a Scottish politician.
