Original full Etruscan calf by Edwards of Halifax, with the center of either cover a small oval inlay containing the figure of a fox and surrounding it is a rectangular gilt-stamped filigree border containing small figures of hounds, raised bands, gilt-stamped compartments; joints and corner neatly repaired prior to 1942, rubbed. There is a possibility that the spine compartments once contained something topical to this book, but now the embellishments within each compartment are worn enough to make them difficult (truncated) to discern. Early ink place-name of Peover [nr. Liverpool]. Early armorial bookplate of Field Marshal Viscount Wolseley (1833-1913). For this edition John and Thomas Bewick contributed the woodcut figures. The fox and hound decorations in this binding are rarely seen, in my experience, from this binder. PROVENANCE: Field Marshal Viscount Woldeley (1833-1913) - Chas. J.
