Hardcover
Hyde Park, New York
by [Augustine of Hippo]; Maria Boulding (Advisor)
Hyde Park, New York: New City Press. Hardcover. Fine. Forty-two volumes, octavo size, approx. 19,000 pp. Saint Augustine of Hippo is arguably the most influential Christian theologian in the entire two thousand years of Church history; his best known works are his "Confessions" and "The City of God", which are here presented in a new translation, along with (once all the volumes have been published) the new translation of all of his works.
For Augustinian scholars, this recent translation of his work is a must-have. Per the web site of the publisher: "In 1990, New City Press, in conjunction with the Augustinian Heritage Institute, began the project knows as The Works of Saint Augustine, A Translation for the 21st Century. The plan is to translate and publish all 132 works of Saint Augustine, his entire corpus, into modern English. This represents the first time in which the works of Saint Augustine will all be translated into English. Many existing translations were often archaic or faulty, and the scholarship was outdated. 'The Works of Saint Augustine, A Translation for the 21st Century' will be translated into 49 published books."
While various editors and translators worked on different volumes, the project was fortunate to have on its advisory board the well-known Benedictine nun, Maria Boulding (1929-2009), who "translated St. Augustine's 'Confessions' (1997) and his 'Expositions of the Psalms' in several volumes (2000-2004), to much acclaim" (n.b., from the publisher's web site).
Offered here are forty-two volumes, all published as of 2018 when this set was ordered. Since then, an additional four volumes have been issued; the final three volumes will be forthcoming. The volumes included here are comprised of: "Answer to Faustus"; "Answer to the Pelagians" (4 volumes); "Arianism and Other Heresies"; "City of God" (2 volumes); "Confessions"; "Expositions of the Psalms" (6 volumes); "Homilies on the First Epistle of John"; "Homilies of the Gospel of John" (Chapters 1 - 40); "Letters" (4 volumes); "Manichean Debate"; "Marriage and Virginity"; "New Testament I and II" (together in one book); "On Christian Belief"; "On Genesis"; "Responses to Miscellaneous Questions"; "Sermons" (11 volumes); "Teaching Christianity"; "Trinity" (2nd edition); "Writings on the Old Testament"; and a "Revisions" volume.
