Hardcover
1954 · [London]
by Jones, Gwyn (Editor); Severin, Mark (Illustrations)
[London]: The Golden Cockerel Press, 1954. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Near fine. Severin, Mark. One of 300 copies, large octavo size, 62 pp. The GCP edition of the play "Circe and Ulysses" written ca. 1614 to 1615, one of the "picturesque and ravishing displays staged on festal occasions in banqueting halls" held during the middle ages (n.b., from Cock-a-Hoop, p. 27).
With seven wood engravings by Mark Severin (1906-1987). Not only a book illustrator; he started by designing pavilions at major exhibitions, postage stamps, and even "greeting telegrams". After WWII he concentrated on providing illustrations for English publishers. A native of Belgium, he was honoured by them with the Order of the Crown and a commander of the Order of Leopold (n.b., from Severin's entry in Horne, "The Dictionary of 20th Century British Book Illustrators", p. 388).
The entry in Cock-a-Hoop goes on to relate that Poliphilus was the type chosen in order "to accord with the darkness of his [Severin's] work on wood." The balance is indeed exquisite, the lightness of the type and the generous margins on each page balancing the complex and almost riotous feeling of the engravings.
___DESCRIPTION: Green buckram spine over pink hand-made paper boards, gilt lettering on the spine, two different decorations in red on the boards, the frontispiece one of the seven wood engravings bound in throughout (six full-page plus the title page illustration); Poliphilus type on hand-made paper, large octavo size (9 1/2" by 6 1/8"), pagination: [1-3] 4-61 [1, colophon], limited edition of 300 copies this no. 290.
___CONDITION: Near fine, the buckram spine without wear, the boards also without wear, a strong, square text block with solid hinges, the interior is clean and bright, and entirely free of prior owner markings; light dustiness to the upper board, the top corners gently bumped but not rubbed; overall a near fine example.
