Aiming to educate the public on health and wellness, Willich emphasized rational thought and scientific inquiry to explain the connection between physical health and mental well-being. At this time, there was a growing interest in nutrition, health, and preventative medicine. Willich, part of the Enlightenment-era movement, originally published this book in London in 1799 and it was well-received and became a popular reference for the growing health-conscious public seeking knowledge and agency over their families welfare. Written in straightforward language, with practical advice, the book bridged the gap between medical expertise and public health education. The second Volume begins with Chapter VII, "Of Food And Drink" - featuring the various properties of food, nutrition for ailments, various methods of correcting bad water, the properties of wine, beer, and spirits, the effects of copious drink, and the use of coffee, chocolate, and spices. At the beginning of the book, there are twelve pages of "Subscribers" - lists of names, in alphabetical order, of individuals that had subscribed to obtain a copy of this printing. Foxing throughout. Hinges were fortified sometime in the past. Previous owner's stamp: JONa:*ADAMS on the front free end paper. 1 cm. loss to head of spine on Vol I, rubbed at head and foot of both volumes, otherwise sturdy and stable.
