New York: Whittaker, Treacher & Co., 1832. First American Edition, Reprinted for The Bookseller. Hardcover. Half red morocco, marbled paper covered boards, raised bands. Good. 325 pages. 23 x 14.5 cm. Frontis, plus seven plates with tissue guards. After originally traveling to America (Cincinnati) to take advantage of a business venture, which subsequently failed, Mrs. Trollope traveled to various American cities, making keen observations about American society, culture, and manners. Trollope found Americans industrious but lacking in appreciation for the finer things in life, such as art and literature. Trollope was particularly critical of what she perceived as uncouth behavior - spitting and chewing tobacco in public. The publication became an instant bestseller on both sides of the Atlantic. Interior foxed. Outer hinges cracked but holding.
