[London]: The Golden Cockerel Press, 1941. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Very good +. Gill, Eric. One of 350 copies, quarto size, 139 pp. Eric Gill (1882-1940) was a highly regarded artist, printmaker, sculptor, and typographer (as well as a complicated man). Gill provided illustrations for numerous fine press publications by the Golden Cockerel Press and the Saint Dominic's Press, as well as with Pepler under the imprint of the St. Dominic's Press. This work contains five of Gill's illustrations, the last done during his lifetime; per the colophon, "[d]uring the last week of his life, while in hospital, he completed the drawings, which after his death were interpreted on copper by his son-in-law, Denis Tegetmeier."
As an interesting perspective, per the bibliography: "[t]his book was set, printed, bound, and published during the London blitz, but it justified our belief that lovers of fine books would not be deterred by Hitler from supporting those who produced them."
