by Squire, Belle
Chicago: A.C. McClurg & Co, 1911. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good +. First printing, sixteenmo size, 296 pp. Viola Belle Squire (1870-1939) was a most fascinating woman: a "suffragist from Illinois who was involved in the Chicago suffrage movement and co-founded the Alpha Suffrage Club with Ida B. Wells. She was especially known for her opposition to paying taxes when women did not have a right to vote. Squire argued expecting women to pay taxes while they were not enfranchised was a form of taxation without representation" (n.b., quote from Wiki). The Alpha Suffrage Club was "the first suffrage organization for African American women" (ibid). When the Club joined in the 1913 suffrage march in Washington, Squire was told to walk with the black women, however, she refused to do so, marching with the Illinois delegation.
Although she never married, she insisted upon being referred to as "Mrs. Belle Squire" , reasoning that if a young man could change from “master” to “mister” without being married, women ought to have the same right. Truly, a woman ahead of her time.
