London: Kegan Paul, Trench, Trübner & Co, 1895. First Edition. Hardcover. Near fine. A collection of fourteen poems steeped in the spirit of the 18th century and brilliantly illustrated by Hugh Thomson. The first of the Cranfield School of British artists who abandoned the 1890s style of Aubrey Beardsley for the delicacy of an 18th century mode, Thomson (1860-1920) is best known for illustrating the iconic peacock edition of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice.
Octavo: xiii, [3], 120 p. with a frontispiece, 31 full-page plates, and 17 texual illustrations, all wood engravings after Hugh Thomson. Original maroon flat-weave cloth over beveled boards, with a gilt-stamped full cover with trees framing a troubadour and sheperdess with sheep and lambs, and a spine ornamented with gilt-stamped foliage, sheep, shepherd's crook, and guitar. Just a hint of wear to the corners and tips; else near fine.
Provenance: from the Publishers' Bookbindings collection of Ellen K. Morris and Edward S. Levin. (Inventory #: 77748)
