North Canaan, Conn: [Printed by the] Press of Connecticut Western News, 1888. Octavo in wrappers (18.5 x 13 cm.), 76 pages. Evident FIRST EDITION. A New England community cookbook, unusual for its omission of any statement of ownership, responsibility, or purpose. With approximately two hundred attributed recipes, including Scalloped Tomatoes, Creamed Oysters, Liver Paté, and a reliable complement of doughnuts, baked goods, and confections. ~ Lakeville is one of the so-called twin towns, with Salisbury, leading into the Berkshires highlands, situated in Dutchess County near the banks of Lake Wononskopomuc. The best candidate for the community that spawned Tried Receipts is probably Lakeville's Methodist Episcopal (now United Methodist) Church, whose congregation was founded in 1789; the prospect of a centennial celebration inspiring the venture must be counted, nonetheless, as no more than a speculative avenue for future enquiry. Internally clean and sound. One-inch chip to the printed, pale blue wrapper at the foot of the spine; closed tear and small waterstain to front wrapper panel, otherwise very good. [OCLC locates five copies; Cook, page 42; not in Bitting, Brown, or Cagle]. (Inventory #: 9581)
