From the preface. Subrhmanyan Chandrasekhar was an Indian-American astrophysicist who went to Cambridge University in 1930 on a Government of India Scholarship. He received his Ph.D. in 1933 and became a fellow of Trinity College for four years. In 1937 Chandrasekhar became a research associate at the University of Chicago, where he became Hull Distinguished Service Professor of Astrophysics in 1947. In 1983 Chandrasekhar was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics "for his theoretical studies of the physical processes of importance to the structure and evolution of the stars."
