The Behnke-Walker Business College and trade school operated from 1900 to the late 1930s, training thousands of students for careers in business, sales, real estate, insurance, and banking. It was founded by Behnke (fl. 1894-1913) and Isaac Walker (b. 1861). They offered courses such as efficiency and sales training, teacher training, accounting, typing, and more. The college had an aggressive sales recruitment system which sent out postcards like the one in this collection. Notable students of the college include Pauline Darling Pauling (1902-2003), sister of Nobel Prize winner Linus Pauling, and Katie Hurley, secretary to Alaska Territorial Governor Ernest Geurening. It is worth noting that the College followed the city of Portland's policies at the time which excluded African Americans from employment at or enrollment in school.
