Washington, D.C.: Government Printing Office, 1894. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. One of the most important and exhaustive treatments of the Native American population in the 19th century. As they had not been treated in detail in previous censuses, it was decided under the administration of Superintendent Robert Porter to prepare this mammoth undertaking, which pays scrupulous, detailed attention to the present state of the American Indian of the times. Included are discussions of Native Americans by state, status reports concerning life on the reservations, disbursement of populations on and off reservations, progress in schooling and employment, etc. Virtually every aspect of the topic is at least considered in this work, if not investigated in depth. The highly prized lithograph color plates of Native American life by Julian Scott and other noted artists are the best such works undertaken in a government publication, and are of exceptional quality. Quarto: vi, [2], 683 pp. with 25 maps (including 3 large, colored folding maps) and 203 plates: 20 in color (2 folding), 25 uncolored lithographs, and 158 photographic plates (collated complete). Original cloth binding, with gilt-stamped titles and blind-stamped borders. The top corner of the front board is bumped, with some general fading and wear along the spine; else about very good. Howes D418; Stamped with National Character 33.
