Whitney describes the ore deposits of this country as known in 1854 and compares them with well-known deposits in other lands. In the chapter on copper, for example, there are six pages on mineralogy and geology of copper ores, 23 pages summarizing occurrences in foreign countries, and 91 pages on deposits of the United States. The book is essential reading for the geologist who wants to known the background of development of the important metals in this country" (The Journal of Geology, Volume 80, Number 4). Notably, it also contains a section on California's gold discoveries. Octavo: 510 pp. with 3 lithograph plates and 44 textual wood-cuts. Original cloth binding, with gilt-stamped titles and decorations, and blind-stamped borders. Partially uncut. Faint stain to the spine heel. The spine is sun faded; otherwise very good.
