by Federico Garcia Lorca
Bièvres: Pierre de Tartas, 1976. Chant Funèbre pour Ignacio Sánchez Mejías (translated as Funeral Song for Ignacio Sánchez Mejías) is a powerful artistic and literary tribute to Ignacio Sánchez Mejías, a Spanish bullfighter who tragically died after being gored during a bullfight in 1934. His death deeply impacted both the public and the intellectual community, including the poet Federico García Lorca. This powerful, multi-layered artistic and literary work pairs Lorca's deeply emotional poetry with Pablo Picasso's evocative illustrations. Produced in a very limited edition, this portfolio not only commemorates a famous bullfighter but also captures a moment in Spanish history and culture through the lens of two iconic figures of the 20th century. It is one of 50 copies (N. 36), which includes an original embossed print on Japon Nacre with a color background, and a suite of four- color lithographs on Richard de Bas paper, collected in two separate folders. The portfolio also contains 10 black woodcuts in the text, 4 full-page color lithographs, and 6 original embossed prints, one of which is on the double wrappers—all executed after Picasso's designs. Two lithographs and some of the embossed prints bear Picasso's signature on the plate. The poems by García Lorca are presented in both Spanish and French. The woodcuts were engraved by Guy Descouens and printed by Pierre Jean Mathan, while the original prints were produced at the presses of Atelier Desclais. All copies are signed by the publisher and endorsed by the Ministry of Bailiffs. The complete collection is housed in the original clamshell box, in black cloth with Picasso's signature in red and Lorca's gilded signature, the spine is decorated with the gilded names of Picasso and Lorca.
