This statement was translated into a number of languages for international distribution, intended to demonstrate Mao's leadership on this question. The English version of Mao's statement begins with the lines "Some days ago, Martin Luther King, the Afro-American clergyman, was suddenly assassinated by the US imperialists. Martin Luther King was an exponent of non-violence.
