Liverpool and London: Henry Young & Sons and Simpkin, Marshall, Hamilton, Kent & Co., Ltd, 1906. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. “This Large Paper Issue is limited to One Hundred Copies, of which this one is No. 71.” Signed by the author, John Hughes, on the limitation page. Based on contemporary newspaper accounts and records provided by family members, this history and genealogy of Liverpool bankers is the first and, perhaps, only account of the subject. Hughes writes in the preface, “My aim has been to give, briefly but clearly, a connected account of the origin and progress of all the private banks of Liverpool, to show who and what were the several partners, and to give short accounts of their family relations. It is an attempt to place on record succinct biographical notices, not to be found in such completeness elsewhere.” Laid in is a manuscript pedigree of Alexander Merivale tracing family descent as well as auxiliary members of the Bright / Merivale family. Royal octavo: xvi, 243, [1, blank], [2, ads] pp. with a color frontispiece, 14 portrait plates, 6 view plates, and 4 facsimile plates. Original brown cloth-covered boards over a brown morocco spine, with gilt-stamped titles and emblem. Faint paperclip indentation along the top edge of the first two leaves. Minor staining to the spine heel, with a bit of bubbling in the cloth and some occasional edgewear. (Inventory #: 77925)
