by BOTANICAL WATERCOLORS
South America, 1800. 26 late 18th-century botanical watercolors over pencil of tropical flora on thick laid paper with fleur-de-lis, cross, WP, and CDG watermarking. 2 of the watercolors feature a human figure, and 2 depict agricultural tools. 17 large watercolors on sheets (18 1/4 x 11 3/4 inch) and 9 medium-sized watercolors on sheets from (12 1/4 x 9 3/4 inches to 16 1/4 x 10 3/4 inches). Sheets laid loose within a quarter green morocco over green cloth clamshell box, gilt-titled on spine. A suite of twenty-six gorgeous botanical watercolors of tropical flora executed by a skilled late eighteenth-century artist.
These delightful large watercolors show beautiful plants, focusing on those used for human consumption such as coconuts and a passion fruit-like vine. Some are clearly agriculturally centered, inlcuding two which show tools related to coconut production, and two that show a man standing atop a coconut tree, gathering its produce. The paperstock and style of illustration is indicative of late-eighteenth century and early nineteenth-century natural history illustration. (Inventory #: 38848)
