Chicago: The Lakeside Press, 1930. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Fine/good. One of 1000 copies, octavo size, 375 pp., in slipcase. Henry David Thoreau (1817-1862) was a leading transcendentalist writer, poet, historian, and abolitionist, best known for his works "Walden" and "Civil Disobedience". This work is part of his writings known as his "excursion" books - he famously advised others to read as much travel literature as possible, so as to "live at home like a traveler" (n.b., quote from "The Writings of Henry David Thoreau").
This publication of "Walden" was designed and illustrated by Rudolph Ruzicka (1883-1978). Ruzicka worked closely with Daniel Berkeley's Merrymount Press designing typefaces and producing illustrations (he worked in both wood engravings and etchings), as well consulting with the Mergenthaler Linotype Company for fifty years (n.b., information from Wiki).
___DESCRIPTION: Decorated paper over boards with a yellow cloth shelfback, gilt lettering and decorations on the spine, fore- and bottom edges rough-cut, title page illustration, other illustrations throughout both full-page and as chapter headpieces; octavo size (9 5/8" by 6 1/2"), pagination: [i-iv] v-xv [3] [1-2] 3-355 [1, blank] [1, colophon].
