One of 380 standard copies, folio size, unpaginated [8 plates and 10 pp. of commentary]. "Milton" is a long mystical poem, one of Blake's prophetic works written circa 1804-1808. The fairly abstract narrative involves Milton in heaven hearing the mournful song of bard, and inspired, returns to earth to intervene on behalf of the poet. Keynes remarks in his commentary that "This epic as a whole contains many passages of exceptional beauty and provides numerous clues useful for the euclidation of Blake's symbolism and philosophy."
William Blake (1757-1827) is arguably the most original and highly regarded English author - unusual in that he excelled both as an author and an artist. Although thought mad by his contemporaries, he was held in high regard for his expressiveness and for the synthesis of philosophical and mystical senses within his work. Blake’s work has been spectacularly reproduced through the pochoir technique by Arnold Fawcus and his Trianon Press, which has an undeniable claim to being the finest press of its kind in the last century and has long been known for their unrivaled artworks in fine colour printing. This edition was printed in Paris by Trianon Press in the workshops of MM. Hourdebaigt and Crampe.
___DESCRIPTION: Original quarter brown morocco with hand-marbled paper sides, top-edge gilt, backstrip lettered in gilt, the fifty illuminated pages were reproduced by the collotype and stencil process, one monochrome plate reproducing the original preface, printed on Arches pure rag paper made to match the paper used by Blake, each page watermarked with Blake's monogram; quarto size (11 1/4" by 8 7/8"), unpaginated [51 plates, 13 pp. of printed text], limited edition, this no. 339 of 380 of the regular editions (426 copies total). Housed in publisher's slipcase covered with the same hand-marbled paper with matching morocco guards at the head and tail of the opening.
___CONDITION: A fine copy, internally bright and free of prior owner markings, the covers are clean, the corners are perfectly straight, the text block is tight and square with solid hinges; clean, crisp, and as new. Slipcase is fine overall, clean and free of chips or toning, with no splits or tears to the seams; a bit of wear to the leather guards, else find; overall a beautiful example.
