Children Satirize Bad Adult Behavior
MONTAUT, Henri de. Defauts et Vices. Composes par... Lithographies par Berr, Haguental & Fagonde. Paris: Chez Aubert & Cie. Editeurs, [1860].
First edition, colored issue. Oblong folio (11 x 16 inches; 280 x 410 mm.). Title-page printed in blue, brown & gold. Twelve hand-colored lithographed plates with interleaves. Each plate is imprinted "chez Aubert," the renowned Parisian printmaking house who also issued the book with plain (tinted) lithographs. Very light marginal foxing to plate no. five (not affecting image) otherwise very clean.
Publisher's printed boards (reproducing the title-page). Mimimal rubbing to extremities, spine and edges slightly browned, but still a remarkable example of this very scarce title.
First edition of the rare suite which depicts children dressed and adopting the mannerisms of adults with burlesque results.
Scarce, with OCLC recording only one copy in institutional holdings worldwide, at Princeton. OCLC notes an Aubert edition of 1860 but does not record its location; KVK locates the Aubert edition at the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin. Extremely scarce in either edition.
The companion volume to Montaut's Vertus & Qualités. Charming period plates in the rococo style reminiscent of Boucher (1703-1770) illustrate children in Ancien Regime costume acting out various adult vices and defects in behavior and character, i.e., greed, envy, pride, pouting, anger, gluttony, etc. to beguiling comic effect.
Henri de Montaut (1825- c. 1890) was a caricaturist, writer and French illustrator. He was responsible, along with other artists such as Riou and Roux, for illustrations to the novels of Jules Verne. He was a regular contributor to satirical publications, especially Journal pour Rire, La Vie Parisienne, Journal Amusant. He was also editor-in-chief of Le Journal Illustré and is best remembered for having illustrated the works of Jules Verne.
