[London]: The Golden Cockerel Press, 1960. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Near fine. One of 470 copies, folio size, 246 pp. The Golden Cockerel Press came together in autumn of 1920, at a time when post-World War I society was ushering in a renaissance of creative minds, including another renaissance of the printing press as the artist's tool similar to that of William Morris and the arts and crafts printers of the previous century. The press worked with many notable artists including Eric Gill, Blair Hughes-Stanton, and Robert Gibbings.
This work would be the final book designed by Christopher Sandford (1902-1983) for the Golden Cockerel Press. Sandford was one of the partners who purchased the Golden Cockerel Press from Robert Gibbings in 1933, and led the Press until he was forced to sell (for financial reasons) in 1959; the new owners allowed the publication of a few books which were in the works at the time of the sale, including this one.
An exceedingly handsome volume, worthy of one of the greatest playwrights and poets in the English language. Included are: "Venus and Adonis", "The Rape of Lucrece", "The Passionate Pilgrime", "Sonnets to Sundry Notes of Musicke", "The Phoenix and the Turtle", the "Sonnets" (all 154), and "A Lover's Complaint"; with an Editorial Note at the end.
___DESCRIPTION: Bound in full red cloth over boards, depiction of a cockerel on the front in gilt, gilt lettering and Press device on the spine, fore- and bottom edges uncut, title page in red and black with a crowing cockerel in yellow, each section opens with a four-line red initial capital; Caslon Old Face type on Golden Cockerel water-marked paper hand-made by Barcham Green, folio size (12 3/4" by 8"), pagination: [1-5] 6-245 [1, colophon]; limited edition of 470 copies, this being no. 439.
___CONDITION: Near fine, with clean boards, straight corners without rubbing, a strong, square text block with solid hinges, the interior is clean and bright, and entirely free of prior owner markings; some sunning to the spine and a short (approx. one-half inch) tear towards the bottom of the rear paste-down (which is not loose, with no evidence of restoration; this may have happened during the production process). Altogether a clean, lovely copy.
___CITATION: Cock-A-Hoop, no. 211.
___POSTAGE: Please note that this is an unusually large and heavy volume additional postage may apply; please inquire for details.
