Oscar Wilde (1854-1900), known for his lively wit and fashionable dress, became one of the best-known personalities in London; his works are still read and performed today. He wrote brilliant plays such as "Salome", "Lady Windermere's Fan", and "An Ideal Husband", short stories (such as "The Happy Prince") as well as his only novel, "The Picture of Dorian Gray".
This Edition de Luxe ten-volume set, published by The Nottingham Society, includes: Vol. I, "The Duchess of Padua" and "An Ideal Husband"; Vol. II, "Salome", "A Florentine Tragedy", "Vera; or, The Nihilists" and "The Importance of Being Earnest"; Vol. III, "The House of Pomegranates" (including "The Young King", "The Birthday of the Infanta", "The Fisherman and His Soul", and "The Star-Child", "The Happy Prince and Other Tales" (those being "The Nightingale and The Rose", "The Selfish Giant", "The Devoted Friend", and "The Remarkable Rocket") and "De Profundis"; Vol. IV, "Reviews"; Vol. V, "Poems"; Vol. VI, "Miscellanies"; Vol. VII, "Intentions" and "The Soul of Man"; Vol. VIII, "Lord Arthur Saville's Crimes", "The Canterville Ghost", The Sphinx Without a Secret", "The Model Millionaire", "The Portrait of Mr. W.H.", "Poems in Prose", and "The Rise of Historical Criticism"; Vol. IX, "Lady Windermere's Fan" and "A Woman of No Importance"; and Vol. X, "The Picture of Dorian Gray".
Note that while there is no publication date, the copyright dates for the various pieces range from 1905-1907, so the set was likely published circa 1909 (the publication date noted by most institutions holding copies of this set) or 1910.
___DESCRIPTION: All volumes bound in half black-leather over marbled paper boards, the spines richly decorated in gilt, top edges gilt, matching marbled endpapers, title pages in red and black, the frontis in each volume with a red-lettered tissue guard; octavo size (8 3/8" by 5 3/4"), pagination: Vol. I, 449 pp.; Vol. II, 448 pp.; Vol. III, 393 pp.; Vol. IV, 424 pp.; Vol. V, 345 pp.; Vol. VI, 321 pp.; Vol. VII, 335 pp.; Vol. VIII, 266 pp.; Vol. IX, 374 pp.; and Vol. X, 272 pp.
___CONDITION: The set is uniformly near fine to fine; the leather is smooth and supple, the boards clean, the hinges are solid with strong, square text blocks, and the interiors are clean and bright; varying degrees of light sunning to the spines, a prior owner gift inscription ("Henry to Vaughan / Mar 12, 1910") neatly written on the front free endpaper of each volume and a number in the same had written in the front pastedown of each volume (we presume a private library number), we had a professional do minor repairs to two volumes to address a bit of wear to the head of the spines, there is faint residue from a paper clip on the flyleaf of Volume I, and a very minor spot of light soil to the front board of Volume IX. Please note that several volumes have several signatures unopened; clearly the prior owner had their favourites but never read the set from beginning to end.
