by Cleaveland, Bess Bruce
Chicago: Ideal School Supply Company, 1922. Complete boxed set of Bess Bruce Cleaveland’s Jointed Animals. The ten figures to be colored, cut and assembled include a cow, sheep, horse, fox, camel, rhinoceros, lion, giraffe, kangaroo, and the monkey featured on the lid of the publisher’s box. American illustrator and educator Bess Bruce Cleaveland (1876-1966) was a prolific designer of children’s art materials: coloring books and posters, drawing cards, paper dolls, and jointed puppets like these. A 1922 advertisement for Jointed Animals in the Los Angeles School Journal claims: “This is not a set of grotesque outlines, but is true to nature and when the animals are colored according to direction this set has a real educational value.” No institutional holdings in OCLC. A fine complete set, in original publisher’s box. Ten uncut illustrated cards, measuring 9.25 x 7.25 inches. With: original sheet of directions and envelope of brass fasteners, housed in publisher’s pictorial box. Light shelfwear to box.
