New York: Gulliver Books / Harcourt Brace & Co, 1997. First edition of translator and folklorist Howard Norman’s retelling of ten traditional Inuit stories, illustrated and signed by Leo and Diane Dillon, accompanied by a signed example of the publisher’s promotional poster. These indigenous tales transport readers across the tundras and snow plains of Siberia, Alaska, the Canadian Arctic and Greenland: “What is most important is that a story, for all of its changes or its reluctance to change, survives by being told, generation after generation.” Highlights include “The Man Who Married a Seagull,” “Home Among the Giants,” and “How the Narwhal Got its Tusk.” Illustrators Leo and Diane Dillon won numerous awards over the course of their long career, including back-to-back Caldecott Medals in 1976 and 1977, for Ashanti to Zulu and Why Mosquitoes Buzz in People’s Ears, the only consecutive medals given to date. They illustrate these tales of the far North with a series of vibrant color plates and ink-rich text illustrations designed as friezes, inspired by the stonecut art of the Inuit. The signed publisher’s poster reproduces their full illustration of the dreaming girl of the title story, an image cropped for the dust jacket. A near-fine copy of book and poster, signed by the celebrated husband-and-wife illustration team. Single volume, measuring 9.5 x 9 inches: xiii, [1], 147, [3]. Original blue cloth spine lettered in silver, blue pictorial boards stamped in blind, snowflake-patterned endpapers, original unclipped color pictorial dust jacket. Black-and-white illustrations and color plates throughout text. Signed by the Dillons on title page. Poster measuring 24 x 16 inches, signed by the Dillons, with horizontal fold at center.
