by [Reindeer - U.S.D.A.]; Stanley, Louise and Fanny Walker Yeatman
Washington D.C.: U.S. Department of Agriculture; [Government Printing Office], 1929. Booklet, stapled in wrappers (23 x 15 cm.), 8 pages. Photographically illustrated, and with an attractive illustration on the front wrapper. FIRST EDITION. One of the more interesting of the USDA Leaflet Series. The author's preface claims this is a response to the introduction of Reindeer into Alaska in the first decades of the 20th century "to supply food for the natives". Apparently, by 1929 there was enough surplus to supply frozen reindeer meat to markets outside of Alaska. Recipes include Broiled Reindeer Steaks and Chops, Breaded Reindeer Cutlets, Rolled Reindeer Chops, Tenderloin, Boned Roast Rib with Apple Stuffing, Swiss Steak of Reindeer, Roast Roast Round of Reindeer, Roast Broiled Shoulder with Watercress Stuffing, Reindeer Stew, Pot Roast, and three recipes for reindeer liver. Light soil and a water stain to lower right corner of wrapper. Near very good. Scarce. With the ink stamp, "Sent at the request of Randolph Perkins, Congressman, Sixth District, New Jersey...". And with the ink ownership signature of "Mrs. R. H[...] Jr., ... Hackensack, N.J.", both to the front wrapper panel. (Inventory #: 9833)
