First edition, 8vo blue cloth over boards, with gilt title on spine and embossed motif on front and back cover. Robert Patterson (1792-1881) was an Irish-born American military officer. He served as a United States Army major general during the Mexican-American War, and a Union Army major general during the American Civil War. The Union Army's defeat at the First Battle of Bull Run is largely blamed on Patterson. He published A Narrative of the Campaign in the Valley of the Shenandoah as a means of defending his actions.
