One of the original series of fore-edge paintings executed by the early twentieth-century master of the form, Miss C.B. Currie, commissioned by J.H. Stonehouse, managing director of Sotheran’s bookshop in Piccadilly. Miss Caroline Billin Currie (1849-1940) was also renowned as the artist for the miniatures for the Cosway bindings prepared for Sotherans, but very liitle is known of her life.
This fore edge painting depicts poet Alexander Pope’s Villa at Twickenham at Cross Deep on the river Thames. As was the custom, there is an inserted calligraphic leaf indicating that this is no. 28 in the series and identifying the subject, signed by Miss Currie.
