First edition of not only the first important history of Amsterdam but also of the Dutch East India Company’s maritime exploration around the world, including the illustrated accounts of the early Dutch voyages to the Arctic in search of a Northeast Passage by Willem Barentsz in 1596-1597 and Henry Hudson's voyages for the Muscovy Company of London in 1607-1608. In addition, Pontanus describes and illustrates the Amsterdam-financed Dutch voyages to West Africa, the Cape and the East Indies from 1594-1611, in particular that of Cornelisz Houtman.
