In addition, Pontanus describes and illustrates the Amsterdam-financed Dutch voyages to West Africa, the Cape and the East Indies from 1594-1611, in particular that of Cornelisz Houtman. Of additional interest are the passages relating to the mercantile activities of Amsterdam, its stock and commodity market, one of the oldest in the World.
