Large polar projection of the southern hemisphere. Only some areas indicating an Antarctic coastline are included, with notations from Sir J. C. Ross' expedition in 1841 and the magnetic pole indicated. Land masses and islands are extensively labeled, showing cities, rivers, and topography. Mountains are rendered by hachure. It is in very good condition with some staining to left corners. Scarce.
George Philip (1800-1882) was a cartographer and map publisher who began working in educational material. His son, also George (1823-1902), joined the successful and expanding firm in 1848. This fine map is an impressive example of their work. (Inventory #: 324348)
