London: Cadell & Davies, Strand & Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, & Brown, 1812. unbound. Map. Engraving with original hand coloring. Sheet measures 22 3/4 x 31 1/2 inches. London: Cadell & Davis, Strand & Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, & Brown, (1812).
This large polar map of the northern hemisphere features beautiful head coloring and careful detail of the surrounding geography. Mountain ranges and deserts are impressively rendered, and land interiors are extensively labeled despite much conjecture. The map is in very good condition. One tiny closed tear to bottom margin, and minor wear to lower centerfold. Otherwise clean and bright with wide margins as issued.
John Pinkerton (1758-1826) was a prominent English mapmaker known for his large and impeccably detailed maps. In this manner, his work marks a turning point from the earlier emphasis on decoration toward a greater emphasis on information. His "Modern Atlas" is one of the best British atlases of the period and is a fine example of his work. (Inventory #: 324350)
