London: Richard Bentley, 1860. The brilliant but impetuous Cochrane had a successful career in the Napoleonic Wars. However he was jailed and disgraced following allegations of a stock swindle in 1814. The following year he escaped from prison and took a position as commander of the Chilean Navy in 1818. From 1823 to 1825 he held a similar post in the Brazilian Navy. He achieved success against Spain and vindicated his reputation. After aiding the Greek navy in a similar capacity, he was pardoned in 1832. His life and career were also a major source for Patrick OBrians fictional naval officer, Jack Aubrey.
