1904 · New York
New York: The Dodge Publishing Company, 1904. Very good to fine; at least one gathering (perhaps of of photos?) is lacking, before the section "Baby's First Words".. A particularly fine and lovingly produced baby book, with childhood ephemera on nearly every page, for Mary Josephine Verhoeff (b.1907). The book itself (New York: Dodge, 1904), is illustrated with poems and space for recording all of baby's "firsts". This copy has been filled out in ink by her parents, Dr. F.H. Verhoeff (a prominent opthalmologist) and his wife Margaret, her mother. Ephemera pasted into the book or loosely inserted include: congratulatory telegrams; manuscript notes; a lock of the baby's hair; many photographs documenting her growth from infant to child, being held by her father and other relatives; and newspaper birth announcements. Judging from the long list of presents received by the family after Verhoeff's birth, and the many photographs of young Mary with her family, it appears that she was an exceptionally loved little girl. Her aunt, also named Mary Josephine Verhoeff (c.1872-1962), was a rare book librarian for the Filson Historical Society and a suffragist.
