Shortly after his baptism into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1850, Louis Alphonso Bertrand played a pivotal role in the translation of the Book of Mormon into French, as well as translating the Doctrine and Covenants, Parley P. Pratt's "Voice of Warning," and various other tracts. In 1855 he left Paris and travelled to Utah to receive his endowments, living in Brigham Young's house for four years and advising him on several issues related to the state of affairs in the French Mission. Ultimately, in 1859, Brigham Young called Bertrand to preside over the French Mission. (Information from "President Louis Bertrand and the Closure of the French Mission, 1859–64" by Richard D. McClellan; "Regional Studies in Latter-day Saint Church History: Europe" edited by Brent L. Top and Donald Q. Cannon). (Inventory #: 67211)
