1930 · Cleveland
Cleveland: The Tropical Paint & Oil Co. Printed in the Tropical Print Shop, 1930. First Edition presumed. Wraps. Stapled. Very Good Minus. Striking paint company catalogue with color illustrations throughout, the palette being orange and yellow, and to a lesser extent, green. The catalogue is scarce -- no listings on OCLC First Search. The product, Elastikote, though, is still out there, it appears. 4to. 27 by 19 cm. 14 paginated pages, including the front wrap, inside and out, but not the rear cover. counting wraps, inside and outside, front and rear. Last page, or inside rear wrap, are a dozen swatches of Elastikote paint samples. Other than the paint sample page's loose tissue guard, every page has some color printing. The fuller palette employed is comprised of orange, greens, blues and yellows, while some of the decoration is more limited, to orange, yellow and black or just orange. While orange is the most conspicuous or dominant color, the paint strips include grays, browns and aluminum -- colors not found in the illustrations or decoration. The paint, Elastikote, is in the brochure being promoted as an especially hardy and durable paint in various industrial and public works applications. Exampled of its usage include street lamps, oil tanks, steel bridges, cable cars. The paint, according to the brochure, used an ancient recipe, used by the Babylonians and Egyptians, based on mineral gum but which had been lost for millennia. Thus the brochure is evoking the Egyptians in its palette as well as in some of the illustrations. The wraps have a slight waxy texture. The cover does have moderate soiling. The catalogue has obviously been handled, and so some pages have light crease marks, but inside the leaves are otherwise clean.
