Belves; Paris: Pierre Vorms, Editeur a Belves, Dordogne. Printer: L'Imprimerie Union, Paris, 1959. First Edition Thus. Portfolio. Flaps holding plates within. Portfolio of card stock. Near Fine. Jean Lurçat. Whimsical artwork combining the aesthetics of Cubism, Surrealism and other Modernist styles while being also quite realistic in its renderings of animals and other figurative components. Lurçat (1892-1966) exhibited with many of the most celebrated artists of the day -- Picasso, Derain, Matisse, Dufy, etc. He is especially remembered for spearheading a revival of French tapestry, which of course this suite commemorates. 4to. 28 by 22 cm. Six plates originally appeared in a 1957 book, "Tapisseries de Jean Lurçat 1939-1957". The portfolio has minimal soiling, and virtually all of it can be removed by wielding an eraser if one is so motivated. The are mounted plates within pristine in terms of the mounted glossy leaves containing the artwork, while the black card onto which they are mounted show minimal, but some, handling. We grade the set Near Fine, but one could credibly assert they are simply Fine.
