by Carpenter, Jane H. and Betye Saar
San Francisco: Pomegranate, 2003. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. Inscribed by Betye Saar on the title page. Considered a premier assemblage artist, Betye Saar (b.1926) has been creating inspired pieces since the early 1960s. Her work is considered highly political, as she challenged negative ideas about African Americans throughout her dynamic career. This comprehensive look at Saar's art, from the 1960 print Samsara to the powerful mixed-media assemblage Blackbird (2002), examines the themes that have formed her work into a thoughtful and cohesive whole. Recently, The Huntington Library commissioned Sayre to create a large-scale work, resulting in "Drifting Toward Twilight" (2023), a site-specific installation that features a 17-foot-long wooden canoe and found objects, including birdcages, antlers, and natural materials harvested by Saar from The Huntington's grounds. Quarto: x, 116 p. with 69 color plates and a few textual figures. Original brown cloth binding, with light brown titles. A fine copy in a fine dust jacket with some very light edgewear.
