1988 · Fullerton, California
by Saar, Betye
Fullerton, California: Art Gallery, California State University, Fullerton, 1988. First Edition. Wraps. Fine/Near fine. The catalogue for a February 6 - March 6, 1988 exhibition organized by Dextra Frankel, with an essay by Lowery S. Sims. Features installations in the form of ritualistic objects and altars on which viewers were invited to add "offerings".
Considered a premier assemblage artist, Betye Saar (b.1926) has been creating inspired pieces since the early 1960s. She was a prominent figure in the Black Arts Movement of the 1970s, which engaged myths and stereotypes about race and femininity. Recently, The Huntington Library commissioned Sayre to create a large-scale work, resulting in "Drifting Toward Twilight" (2023), a site-specific installation that features a 17-foot-long wooden canoe and found objects, including birdcages, antlers, and natural materials harvested by Saar from The Huntington's grounds.
Oblong octavo: 36 p. with color plates and textual illustrations. Original blue paper wrappers. A fine copy in a near fine dust jacket with some very light rubbing. (Inventory #: 77619)
