In instalments beginning on pages 379 and 473 is the first appearance of James Russell Lowell's "Fireside Travels" which would in 1864 be collected in "Fireside Travels." There is a four-part work entitled "Notes from my Knapsack" about a journey through Texas and Mexico (commencing pages 170, 252, 365 and 660) and an amusing article entitled "Adventure on the Plains." Most of the articles, stories and poems are unsigned. Longfellow, Thoreau, Bayard Taylor, C. D. Warner, Cooper and C. E. Norton are among the other authors who contributed to Putnam's Monthly over its early years. It was edited by C. F. Briggs with G. W. Curtis and Parke Godwin as associate editors.
