by (LAVALLEE, Athanase)
26 pp. 8vo, late 19th-cent. marbled boards, leather lettering-piece on spine, orig. printed wrappers bound-in. Paris: C. Paillet, 1818.
An interesting copy of a scarce sale catalogue - annotated throughout in a contemporary hand recording prices and buyers' names - dispersing the collection of Athanase Lavallée (1748-1818), who was named secretary of the Louvre in 1797; we locate one copy of this catalogue in North American collections. Lavallée assembled a choice group of paintings, drawings, decorative arts, curiosities, etc. A total of 152 lots are described, with most prices realized written in the margins by someone who was clearly a savvy observer of the art market (perhaps a dealer?).
A fine and special copy, the original wrappers are a nice survival. Bookplate of Henry Pannier to front paste-down and stamp of the Bibliothèque Heim to verso of title.
❧ Lugt 9318. (Inventory #: 10577)
