[Album Compiled by Nurse Serving in World War I]

Mostly Texas and France, 1919. Very good. 7" x 11". Leather over flexible card. 100 pages with 354 black and white photos adhesive mounted. Most photos measure from 3½" x 2½" to 5½" x 3½" and most are captioned but many captions are difficult to read. Album and contents generally very good or better with light wear.

This is an album compiled by a nurse, documenting her participation in World War I. Approximately 80 percent of the album is devoted to her wartime service where she was either a member of the Army Nurse Corps or the Red Cross.

The album begins at Camp Bowie in Texas where she was stationed as late as March 1917. At (truncated) Camp Bowie, there are photos of the 36th Infantry Division in training as well as on marches. There are shots of a military review at the camp and one showing bayonet practice. We also see many buildings around Camp Bowie, including the base hospital.

At least 75 photos show uniformed nurses. Many of these are posed shots but some show the nurses around wards as well as with patients. Many of the women are identified by last name, as are some of the soldiers in posed shots; a few of the women are identified by both first and last name.

As of late 1917 the compiler was still in Texas and based on captions we know she was in France from at least April 1918 to June of 1919. There are some photos aboard ship as well as on arrival overseas. In France we see internal shots of United States General Hospital #1 and other captions note photos around Base Hospitals 68 and 70. There are many photos around Camp Hospital 26 which was located in Noyers including the camp's cemetery. Other identified towns in France include Bescanon, Dole, La Baule, Noyere, Valence, Nice, Nantes and Allerey. Also in France, there is a great shot of the compiler climbing out of a trench and several others showing her visiting front-line areas including her posing with a destroyed tank, pictures of camoflaged roads, shell holes and destroyed villages. Approximately 35 photos in all show war zones that she toured.
