New York, NY: The John Day Company, 1940. Very good -. 8 7/8” x 6”. Bifolium brochure, printed all four sides. Pp. [4]. Very good minus: moderately creased and worn with a few spots of soiling and penciled notation to top edge.
This is an illustrated promotional for a biography of Elizabeth Cady Stanton that was written by a leader in the fight for women's suffrage and equal rights, Alma Lutz.
Alma Lutz was born in 1890 and graduated from Vassar College in 1912. She was a writer and editor for the National Woman's Party (NWP) from the 1920s to the 1940s, played an active role in NWP's work on the passage of the Equal Rights Amendment, and was for many years a member of the party's national council. Lutz published numerous books and articles on women's rights and women's history, not limited to Crusade for Freedom: Women of the Anti-Slavery Movement (1968), Susan B. Anthony: Rebel, Crusader, Humanitarian (1959) and Created Equal: A Biography of Elizabeth Cady Stanton, published in 1940. She was part of historian Mary Beard's circle of women activists and scholars and served on the advisory board of the Schlesinger Library. Lutz died in 1973.
This brochure advertises Created Equal, “the first full biography of an American who less than four decades ago was called 'The Greatest Woman the World Ever Produced.'” It provides a short but substantial introduction to “Judge Cady” as well as an excerpt from the opening chapter, “A Defect of Sex.” The rear explains “Why Every Alert Woman Will Want to Read” the work and holds an order blank for a $3 copy available direct from the publisher in New York City.
OCLC shows multiple entries and holdings for the finished work but no copies of this promotional. (Inventory #: 8328)
