Hardcover
1910 · New York
by Plato; J. Wright, John Llewelyn Davies, David James Vaughan, F.J. Church (Translators)
New York: The Nottingham Society, 1910. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Near fine. One of 1000 sets "printed for subscribers", three volumes, octavo size, approx. 970 pp. Plato (ca. 427-348 BCE) has been aknowledged for centuries as one of the major contributors to Western philosophy.
His "Republic" (the second volume in this set) has endured for thousands of years, inspiring a myriad of academic and political discussions, as well as exemplifying the Socratic dialogue; Plato discusses such subjects as justice, the philosopher-king, poetry, and the immortality of the soul using this question-and-answer form.
Oddly scarce in the online marketplace, we see no full sets available as of this writing. Please note that, while we believe this to be a complete set in three volumes, all of the usual references we have searched give no indication of the number of volumes to be expected in a full set.
___DESCRIPTION: Bound in green half leather over marbled paper boards, gilt lettering and decorations on the spines, top edges gilt, fore-edges uncut, marbled endpapers, each frontis a different reproduction of a piece of artwork depicting Plato in sepia with lettered tissue guard, title pages in red and black with "Edition De Luxe" on each title page, limitation statement on the verso of the title pages, this set no. 267 (written in the first volume only), note that many signatures are unopened; octavo size (8 3/8" by 5 3/4"), pagination: Vol. I, 269 pp., Vol. II, 406 pp., and Vol. III, 293 pp.
