by Cady, Harrison
No place, 1927. Original illustration by Harrison Cady for Sherman Ripley's The Raggedy Animal Book, published by Rand McNally in 1928. Written in rhyme, Ripley's storybook captures the imaginative play of two little girls who create a series of raggedy animals from cardboard and art supplies. This charming image appears on page 17, illustrating the chapter "The Raggedy Scarecrow and the Raggedy Crows." The hallmarks of Cady's style are evident in the cartoon-like rendering of the scarecrow's face and body, and in the curious crows who are amused, rather than frightened, by his jaunty appearance. The visibly rich inking and full-page composition make this a particularly attractive drawing by the American illustrator best remembered for his long collaboration with children's author Thornton Burgess. A near-fine original illustration. Pen and ink, image measuring 12 x 9 inches on illustration board measuring 16 x 13 inches. Signed "H. Cady" in lower right image. Publisher's penciled note and date on verso. Tipped to archival window mat at top edge. Small mark to left margin, well outside image border.
