The Kelmscott & Doves Presses; An Essay by Alfred W. Pollard, Presented with Leaves from the Kelmscott Golden Legend and the Doves English Bible

One of 55 copies, folio size, 29 pp. The Kelmscott Press, begun by William Morris (1834-1896), and the Doves Press, founded by T. J. Cobden-Sanderson (1840-1922), are two of the finest examples of private presses, and their output was associated with an exquisite attention to detail and fine letterpress printing; Morris and Cobden-Sanderson knew each other and were both involved in the Arts and Crafts movement in England.

This publication by Heavenly Monkey, itself renowned for the same attention to detail and exquisite letterpress printing, contains (truncated) an essay by English bibliographer Alfred W. Pollard (1859-1944), in which he examines the influence of both presses on typography and design; as this is the "Printed" copy of the book, it has reproductions of original calligraphy by Martin Jackson.

Tipped in are two leaves, one from the Kelmscott Press' "The Golden Legend" and one from the Doves' English Bible, both examples of superb typography and book design.
