[Seattle?]: The Lightbearers, Science of Being, 1950. Lithograph poster, 33.5 x 16" on cardstock. Edge wear and a few small tears, old tape remnants to verso. Edges curled. Image bright and clean. Very good.
One of if not the first printing of this beautiful image that represents the Lightbearers/Science of Being Organization, now located in Sumas, WA. Baron Eugene Fersen (1874-1956) developed the philosophy known as The Science of Being, blending Eastern and Western ideals and advocating for personal transformation during the years leading up to and following WWI. His famous and influential book, The Science of Being, was published in 1923, two years following his founding of the group in 1921.
Sometime during WWI, Fersen commissioned Princess Marie Eristoff-Kasak (1857-1934) and Henry Malcolm Thurburn (1886-1981) to paint the piece, "The Morning Star," which depicts Fersen as "The Lightbearer," which according to the organization "represents in allegorical form the transition NOW in process in the evolution of Humanity." It is also known as a "Picture with a Soul." The message below the image states:
"Men of the Earth, Brothers in Eternity, Shake your souls! AWAKE!
The hour so long waited for, the promised hour, has come.
Over the dark firmament of suffering Humanity is rising the Morning Star,
heralding the day when you will understand that man's most sacred duty is to be Man - that is, to manifest LIFE, INTELLIGENCE, TRUTH and LOVE.
There is no higher aim, no vaster problem, and you who realize this will break the fetters with which Ignorance & Fear have bound unconscious Humanity,
will stand up free, and know yourselves to be the Eternal Manifestation of the Unmanifest, Witnesses of the Absolute, Sons of that GREAT ALL, whom you call GOD."
The Science of Being owns the image and still reproduces it today. This very early printing comes from the estate of a first generation Lightbearer, and is scarce thus.
