Translation by K.K Tolstoy. Off-print from Novyi Zhurnal Innostrannoi Literatury, where the novel was printed serially earlier in 1898. Later in 1898 this translation was published by Novyi Zhurnal in a smaller, more conventional book format. At the end of 1898 a different translation was published in a different periodical and then in book format. WorldCat locates this translation only in the smaller format, (truncated)
