Tenth printing, originally published in 1888.  Lanciani's book was an immediate success and became one of Houghton and Mifflin's best selling travel books of the season.  His text is a combination of new scholarship, describing (truncated) the archeological discovers in Rome and a serious travel guide for many of the ancient monuments of the city.  The illustrations include wood engravings, reproductions of art, heliotypes in black and white of city views, and maps.  It is printed on lightly coated paper and is a very substantial book.  With faults a good copy of a standard book.
